Of KM, Lave wU 1 The trrand naval Attack which bed been preceded by the attempted explosion of the powder-boat wm mado on tba follow ing day, Admiral Porter laja: "At daylight 00 the 24th the fleet sot under way and stood in, in line cf battle. At 11.30 a. m. . the signal was made to engage the forts, the Ironsides leading, and the Monadnock, Oanonions, and Mahopto following. The Ironsides took her position in the most beantifnl and seimanlike manner, got her spring out, aad opened deliberate tiro on the fort, whioh was firing at her with all its guns, whioh did not seem numerous m the northeast faoe, though wo ouuoiod what appeared to be ssvent-en duds : but four or five of these were tired from that direction, and they were silenced almost ss soon as the Ironsides opeutd ber torrl fio battery. The Minnesota then took her position in handsome style, and her gun, after getting the range, weie fired with rapidity, while tbe Mohioao, Colorado, and tbe large vefsels uurked on tba plan, got to their stations, all flriog lo cover themselves while anchoring. IS? the last of the large vessels anobored and gut their batteries into play, but one or two guus of tbe enemy were fired, this d'tnfer driving them all to their bomb proofs; tbe battle became general ;. . . .booU a tor rent of missiles were fulling iota and borslioir over it Iths fort I that it was itu possible for any human being to stand it .... Bat when they all got into pluoa aad commenced work in earnest, the shower of shell (one hundred and fifteen per rain ate) was Irresistible. .... 1 Uur men wore at work at the gnns five hours, and Rlad to get a tittle ret." (see pagos IM, and 125, Report of the Committee on the Oondaot of the War.) The tire cf tbe navy on this atlaok was as rapid as on any of tbe followioff days. I he navy must have fired away about ha!f of its ammunition on this day, because, at tbe end of the bom bardment on tbe 25 .b, Captain Ureece told General Weitzel that the navy had not sufficient ammunition to ooniiuus iu case the army would eleot to remain on shore. Admiral Porter says in his report of tbe bombardment of tbe 25th December, " As the ammunition gave out tho vetsals retir ed from aotion." And in a letter to Gen eral Butler dated tbe 26th of Daoomber, 186 : " I have ordered the largest vessels to prooeed off Beaufort and till np with ammunition, to be ready for another at tack." It is apparent thai tbe ammuni tion ns:d on tbe 21th of Deoember con tributed little to tbe objects of the ex Dcdtition. Tbe War and Navy Depart meet bad determined that a combined attack ef tbe two branobes of tbe servioe wss neoessarv for the rednotion of the fort, The Secretary of the navy thought that it was not wise to even attempt tne capture of the fort witbont a co operating force of tbe army. It does not appear from whence Admiral For: or had received instructions to make the purely naval attack on the 24tb. Snppose Gen. Butler had returned to Fortress Monroe without making sn effort in thB direction of the object of the expedition, would it not have been the duty of Admiral Porter to postpone his attack until be bad tbe neootsury co-opera tinor arinv force near tbe scene of opera' tions and ready to land ? What would the country have said ii Gen. Butler, while Ivincr off Fort Fitber watting for the navy during the first days of beautiful weather which - preceaea tne norm, nnu de termined lo take advaniage of it and attack 7 Too navy bad n: more riirtil to attack without the army, thau the army would bae had to attack witbont tbe navy Htiii. tne Acimirai stjs inns ue determined to attack. It is very true that he states in his letter lo Morotury Wells, dated January 21, looo, "In a converse Hon witn Oeneral lirant itxpreeaiy told him that I wanted nothing to da with General Botler." Notwithstanding this admission, it would be a very serious oharge to make against tbe Admiral that be aid not wtsn uenerai uutior present when he made i attempt to take the stronghold. General Butler, on the other hand, seemea to nave taken great precau tion that tho tnlentt cordial sbou'd be maintained between the army and navy. Admiral Potter, although the iomor olH oer, sent his fleet captain to confer with General Butler instead of going himself, while th General twioe called upon the Admiral at Fortreca Monroe on busineis connected with tbe expediton. How ever, after the navy was once ready to commence, there seemed to be a desire t) posh shsad, .regardless of tbe army. Tbe commanding orucer 01 ine navy seemed to say, "Here I am off Fort Fish er, all prepared to attaok, and determined to go on : I am going to take this fort my self ; if tbe army wants to participate ia the glory that will attend the achievement, it most hurry np, or it will bs too late; if the fort succumbs to the fire of my navy, I will send a handfnl of my marines ahore and receive ita surrender." Tbecffioers and men on board the Baltio. whioh ves sel had remained at sea, crowded her decks in wonderment, gsEingattbeterrifio fire on th fort, . and asking themselves what advantages was to be gained by it, while tbe troops which iisd been deemed necessary to take tbe fortification were so many miles away. Poring the bombard ment the fort replied at long intervals in a sullen and determined manner. There was no perceptible change in the appear aao of the fort, for it proved, on its cap ture, that the heavy shots had struck in ita sides and buried themselves in the sand, whioh bad fallen baok to it place aad refilled the breaches msde by the pro jectiles. On Saturday morning, tbe 24th of Deoember, General Butler was first in formed at Beaufort, a. C, that th powder-boat had beea exploded on the pre vious night at abont a quarter before two o'clock. After ordering his transports to follow him, h started for and arrived off Mew Inlet between fonr and five P. M., io time to see the end of the first day's bom bardment. A staff officer was sent on board to confer with Admiral Porter, but he retorted word that be was too much fatigued to give them audience, but would receive General Weilxeland CoL Corn stock early in the morning. At balf.poM aix o'clock, Sanaa morning, General Weitxel repaired oo board the Malvern, with instructions from General Butler to Cape Fear river. To this proposition Admiral Porter did not aooedu. General (Irani bad said on ibis subject to General Weitscl : " Weitzol. ttis is to be made another Mobile affair. .The navy will run some of their vessels into the Cape Four, and I would advise yon to land your tr ope and take a position across tne peninsula, ana ino,.rort runer ana these works will fall cxaotly as Fort Mor gan did." There were a number of cap tured block' ade-rnonsrs in the fieol that bad been fit- tod np as gunboats. It had bar a thought tbst those vessels mignt have been utilized in thB undertaking, but tne Admiral ue oided otherwise, and the idea of making tbts anotner mobile atiair was abandoned. Preparations were now made to .recom mence the bombardment, and if possible to efl'eot a landing of tbe troops. The transports had eontinued to arrive daring the night, and by the morning of the 25th of Deoember were in their proper posi tions off New Inlet. At aboot eighl a, ru. the navy formed in line of battle, the Ironsides leading la the attack and the monitors follow iog. Tho firing from the visieis was a great deal slower on this dny than ou tbe day before. It was half pott one in the afternoon bo foio the Flag Pond Bittery was entirely silenced, and arrangements were completed by tbe naval brigade, tinder command of lirigadier-Genetal O. K. Orabam, to com mttnes the landing of tbe troops. To cover tbn landing the Xirooklyn and seventeen gunboats opened fire on the stiip of wood just bok of tbe teaoh wbiob bid the ene my from our view. They also sent boats to the troops and rendered evory stisistancs the could. it was a grand sight to see the Brooklyn open her broadsides, 'I he enemy did not seora to relish the fire, and soon retreated and allowed .the army to make their landing without furthor resis tance, but not until Ihoy loot a few shots whistling through the rigging tf tbe Bon Deford snd the Baltio and othor vessela of the army liner. I'he l.nding wss effected iu the vicinity of the Flag Poud Bttery, which was situated about three miles north of Fort Fisher. Five hundred men of General Curtis'' brigade ' of General Ames's division were tbe first troops to land ou the beach, General Car tii being ' the first man to touch the land. As this snoot ssful disembarkation tuck place, a prolonged cheer wol! ud from the. decks of tbe transports, Br tie enorgetio efforts of Gen. Graham the re mainder of Curtis's brigade was speedily and -vbandsomely landod. , tikirnaishors were thrown out into tbe woods in (rout to cover the disembarkation wbiob con tinued to take placo. Gen. Cnrtis imme diately formed his brigade and marched toward tbe fort along the sea beaob. As tbia brigade approached Flag Pond Bat tery the gartison ran np tbe white flag of surrender. Tbe troops pushed on rapidly through the sand, for they were naturally anxious to take tbe prisoners. However, ere this qould be effected a boat was sent ashorse and the garrison, to tbe number of sixty-five men, curried off on board of tne Santiago de Uuba. Xqe prisoners be longed to the 17th North Carolina Regi ment, whioh regiment our troops bu 1 ft in front of their lines nesr Rich mond, Vs., before starting npon the expedition. By the time Curiis's bri gade bad been landed and formed, it was ! quite evidont that the surf was rapidly be-1 coming heavier; already many bojts were swamped. None of the men sfter tbn-e o'clock reaohod tho shore without gotling a thorough drenching. The mi n struggled gallantly with the elomcuis, and all that nerve and strength oonl I do wu dotae in order to get the boats through tbe still rapidly rising aurf.. Jljr the Her culean tuVts of all, the most of Fenny packers s brigade was landed and matched forward to support Curiia, wbo in tba mean-time hal been pushed np to the at tack. The sana Deicg very deep, the marching was neon airily slow. It was an utter impossibility to march the men on the double nmck. Ou its wsy up to tho fort Uenerai Cur tis's brigade captured a battalion of North Carolina Junior Reserves, numbering aboot two hundred and fifty men nnder the command of a major, who bad been sent ont of tbe fort because there were not a euflio ent nnmber of bomb-proofs there lo contain them, Xney bad been ordered to remain ontside Ihe works during tbe day and to return at night after the fire of the navy had ceased. This an important fact. It seems to prove that there must have been a garrison large enough to man tho parapet of th fort without drawing npon these reserves. This taken together with tbe other facts, clearly shows that there was a wetl-diaoiplined garrison with in tbe walls always ready to man tbe para pet and palisade aa soon as ss the bom bardment shonld end. Tb prisoners were sent eff on board tb transports. While Cartis's brigade was preparing for the S8 aialr, some of of tbe men came npon a line of telegraph tbe wires of which were out. They also captured a Rebel mail- bag. The letters were written by mem bers of the senior reserves to their fami lies abont domestio matters, and to promi nent men asking for their influence to get tetired from further military doty. Cnrtis marched resolutely on, bnt notwithstand ing his great efforts to force march his men. tne day was fast growing to an end before he had advanoed hi skirmishers op to tbe ion end round Himself in position to ohsrgs. This lino was pushed np to within two hundred yards of the fort, tbe garrison being kept in their bomb-proofs oytnenreoi tne navy.. a sn men were wounded at this time by our own shall.- Immediately npon the cessation of tbe fire of tbe navy, th garrison of tbe fort remanned the works and tb palisade. .The land front had only two of . its gun dis abled, and the fori was "substantially nn injnred aa a defensive work. The enemy opened en our skirmish line and fired through the loopholes of the palisade. Oeneral Butler in his report dated Head- qnarters , Department of .Virginia and North Uaroluia, IJeoembef. 2o. 18CA ssvs that "it was evident aa soon as tbe fire of tb navy ceased, because of darkness that tbe fort was fairy manned again and open ed with grape and canister npon our picket line."
